Robin Sparkles Morphs Into Robin Daggers On 'How I Met Your Mother' (And Pays Homage To Angsty 90s Music Videos)
How I Met Your Mother is the kind of show that, against your better judgment, you just can't stop watching. Even the most hardcore fans of the show would readily admit that it's been years since the show hit its creative peak, and despite the fact that we've yet to meet the titular Mother of the show, it feels as if we, the viewers, will never stop sliding down the slippery slope of denouement. Still, we tune in. Not just because we've grown to love Barney and Marshall and Lily and Robin like family —please note that I omitted Ted from the list, because WHO REALLY LIKES TED ANYWAY, AMIRITE?!?— but because the show is still capable of delivering up an occasional gem of an episode, or an humorous insight into a character that we've never been privy to before. Last night's episode of HIMYM belongs to that category.
For those that are not familiar, news anchor Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) has a semi-secret alter ego. Back when she was a teenager growing up in Canada, she became the Canadian equivalent of a bubblegum pop star like Debbie Gibson or Tiffany, singing frothy pop tunes like "Let's Go To The Mall" and "Sandcastles In The Sand" in front of hordes of donut-devouring teens under the stage name Robin Sparkles. Well, last night we learned that Sparkles' career took an Alanis-esque turn in the mid-90s. After an affair with Paul Shaffer went awry (which was revealed in a cute Behind The Music spoof called Underneath The Tunes), Sparkles morphed into Robin Daggers, an angst-ridden artist who sang about being scorned in a track called "P.S. I Love You." The video is, as Barney appropriately described last night, "the most '90s music video ever." We picked out a couple of the homages for you below -- Check 'em out and let us know if we missed any!
Hmmmm, sexy undressing while a flashlight shines on the protagonist? Definitely Fiona Apple's "Criminal."
Words scrawled out in chalk? Pearl Jam's "Jeremy."
Moshing mounties? Reminds us of moshing students in Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video.
Creepy shirtless old guy? Straight out of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" playbook.
And, of course, Robin Sparkles as Alanis Morrissette in "You Oughta Know."
Are there any we missed? Let us know in the comments!
