Brie Larson Playing the First Female Presidential Candidate Is Needed Now More Than Ever

Brie Larson is headed to Amazon to play a leader in the women's suffrage movement.

The Oscar-winning actress will reportedly play Victoria Woodhull, the United States’ first female presidential candidate, in a self-titled biopic, according to Deadline. Larson is also reportedly producing the film.

Time for a quick history lesson. Woodhull was a suffragist who became the first woman to run and be nominated for President of the United States in 1872, more than 40 years before women had the right to vote. She went on to become the first woman to own a Wall Street investment firm. She has been described as a women’s liberator, non-conformist, conniver, narcissist, politician, and rebel by Deadline. The role is a perfect fit for Larson as she's known to publicly advocate women's rights and was one of the many celebrities who attended the Women's March on Washington in January.

As we roll our eyes at the many sexist remarks from Donald Trump, this film couldn't come at a better time. 2016 ended rough. Most of us were heartbroken over Hilary Clinton's unexpected election L, but when the clock struck midnight on December 31, women have hit the ground running in 2017. With success of the Women's March on Washington and the international Women's Day Strike, an empowering story of this historic suffragette will keep the momentum swinging in the right direction. It will show how far we've come since the late 1800's and motivate us to where we wanna go. 2020 can't come soon enough.
