Halsey Tweets About Hotels Not Offering Shampoo For People Of Color, and Then, Has to Check a Few "Fans"
Everyone who has ever traveled knows that hotels usually provide free toiletries like soap, shampoo and conditioner to their guests.
If you are a person of color, or someone with textured hair, chances are these products don't always work for you. Well, according to singer Halsey, this is something the hospitality industry seriously needs to change. Taking to Twitter, the 23-year-old brought up a valid point about hotels needing to step their game up when catering to diverse clientele. "I’ve been traveling for years now and it’s been so frustrating that the hotel toiletry industry entirely alienates people of color," she said. "I can’t use this perfumed watered down white people shampoo. Neither can 50% of ur customers. Annoying."
After one user argued that the easy fix is to just bring your own shampoo, Halsey again had a valid argument.
Several people had mixed reactions to Halsey's tweet, including one user who assumed she is white (for the record, Halsey has an Italian mom and African American father...and her hair is very much naturally curly.)
Halsey has spoken about her biracial heritage once before in a 2017 interview with Playboy. She says even as a white-passing biracial woman, she, "doesn't feel like one, continuing, "I’m a black woman. I’m proud to be in a biracial family, I’m proud of who I am, and I’m proud of my hair."
That sentiment is something echoed in her Twitter stream today. She says the issue is bigger than just hotel shampoo. It's about inclusiveness. "The point is that mass production of those products as the standard is part of a greater problem of disenfranchisement," she concludes. "If white ppl can enjoy the luxury/convenience, there should be an option for everyone to. Its an “insignificant” example of a bigger problem. That’s all!"
We couldn't have said it better ourselves! Finally, someone gets it.
Halsey isn’t the only one who can get candid when talking about race and hair. Check out this video of interracial couples talking about the nuances of hair that exist in their relationships.
