The actress has enjoyed a big few months since the movie's release thanks to a number of honors and accolades for her heart wrenching performance as a tortured and brutalized slave. While she commands a serious presence on screen, her life off has been anything but. As for her Oscar nom, the film's director, Steve McQueen tells USA Today how the actress reacted when she found out the news:

"She rang me in tears and she said 'Thank you, thank you, what have you done?' I said, 'Girl what have you done? Congratulations to you,' " he says.
