The Most Insane 'Pretty Little Liars' Theories on Reddit

Pretty Little Liars fans, rejoice! The second half of the fifth season premieres tonight on ABC Family. We received a little taste of Rosewood with the "ChristmAs" special last month; however, Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) are officially back in business. And the first question on everyone's mind — as it has been for the past five years — is, "Who the hell is A?"

Reddit users have some pretty wild theories on who exactly lies underneath the black hoodie. There are solid arguments that one of the core four girls is A, with particular suspicions toward Aria and Hanna. However, we also have a few wildcard theories — like, um, Emily's dad Wayne. But that's not all Reddit users are discussing. One sleuthing user has a theory that asserts Bethany is Jessica DiLaurentis' daughter, while another accuses Mrs. DiLaurentis of resenting her son Jason so much that she tried to make him a girl. Yup, the Internet is a wild place.

Here are nine PLL Reddit theories that are just a tad bit kooky. Take a gander, and let us know the craziest theories you've stumbled across in the comments below.

Aria is Big A.

Entertainment Tonight seems to believe this theory, as does Reddit user hashtagshowoff, and we must admit it's pretty convincing. According to the theory, A shenanigans didn't start happening until Aria returned from Iceland (or, from a different perspective, until her hot-for-teacher crush Ezra Fitz started working at Rosewood High School). We also learn at the beginning of the show that Aria knew about her father Byron's affair and hated lying about it to her mother Ella. But lo and behold, Ella received a letter from A that revealed the secret, thus ending Aria's inner frustration. Also, let's not forget that Mona — the first A — referred to Aria as Big A, the girls often cite Aria as the best liar, and the Aria doll seen on the show occasionally is decked out in A attire (while the other ones are dressed normally).

There are no coincidences in Rosewood.

Alison and Bethany are twins.

leilalei believes Alison and Bethany are the rare set of twins that come from different fathers. However, at the very least, the user asserts Bethany is related to Mrs. DiLaurentis. According to the theory, Bethany is specifically the spawn of Mrs. D and Peter Hastings (the same as Jason). Both families were torn apart when it was revealed Peter was Jason's father. Peter couldn't let catastrophe happen again, so he sent Bethany to the Radley mental hospital. When Alison finds two identical yellow dresses in the "ChristmAs" episode, Mrs. D tells her to hide them or her father would leave them.

Could the second dress be Bethany's, and Mrs. D hid the secret to keep peace? Totally plausible. A final straw in the coffin was when Mrs. D received a call that Alison was at Radley, only to find out it was actually CeCe Drake. (The two used to impersonate one another.) She was noticeably furious over this, and the reason why could be she didn't want Alison to find out about Bethany. This takes The Parent Trap to a whole new level.

Melissa Hastings is Big A.

The user believes Melissa's access to medical equipment through Wren plus her frequent absence from the show make her a viable suspect. Furthermore, every time the girls have taken evidence to the police, it has backfired. emilyann1874 alleges Melissa became A to get the girls to keep quiet, which inadvertently helps them in some way. It's also possible Melissa took the photos of the girls at Alison's grave during season three to blackmail them into keeping hush-hush; if they revealed themselves, they would've gotten into much more trouble. And let's remember in season five when Melissa admitted to burying Bethany because she thought Spencer killed her.

Was that an act of heroism? If so, then A might be akin to The Dark Knight. Just, ya know, with more lip gloss.

Cece is Bethany's alter ego.

Even though Bethany is dead, occultchicken mentions that CeCe was seen in that mysterious yellow top the night Alison was buried, and that Alison and CeCe have an almost twin-like bond. CeCe was also in the Radley mental hospital (like Bethany), so is it possible they are the same person? After all, we haven't seen what Bethany looks like...yet.

Wayne Fields is Big A.

His military roots also might give him access to surveillance equipment to keep close tabs on the four girls. Furthermore, while not an extremely strong motive, communitygeek hypothesizes Wayne became A to protect Emily from Alison's web of lies.

Hmmm...we're not sure we believe this one, but it's definitely interesting.

Toby is Big A.

Spencer's boyfriend?! One half of the beloved Spoby power couple? Say it isn't so! Well, DanielGonshor says it is. And he's got some valid points. Toby has been a consistent cast member since the first episode, was already established as an A team member a few seasons back and has a pretty damn good motive. (The liars blinded his sister Jenna.) He's also very physically fit and can execute A's stunts easily, has beautiful eyes — a frequently listed A characteristic — and knows how to pick a lock.

Toby does fit the bill, although we hope this isn't true.

Mrs. DiLaurentis wanted Jason to be a girl.

It's far-fetched, but carpe-jvgvlvm has some goods to back it up. According to the user, a winter premiere promo clip showed Jason flipping through old family albums but finding no pictures of himself. carpe-jvgvlvm speculates that there is no twin sister to Ali (as speculated), but rather Mrs. DiLaurentis used to dress Jason up like a girl because she desperately wanted a daughter. Then, Mr. DiLaurentis  got rid of any evidence of this by destroying old pictures. That would explain the infamous two dresses hijinks: one for Alison and one for...Jason? The user also believes this is why Jason wanted to start the NAT Club a few seasons back: To see if other families were as effed up as his. We know — so crazy.

Mike Montgomery is Big A.

Popkaiture suggests fans stop looking at big characters in their A search and focus attention on supporting roles, like Aria's little brother. The user alleges Mike's violent temper is actually a product of bipolar disorder, and this might be how he transforms into A. He also has a habit of flying under the radar; when Aria confronts Mike about stealing some Jenna-crafted loot, he says he took it from Officer Garrett. This put the attention on Garrett, leaving Mike to skulk behind the shadows. He's also very secretive about what he does on his laptop and gets defensive when Aria or Ella invades his space. The Mona-and-Mike love affair is also sketchy. During their rendezvous, Mike insisted Aria and her friends forgive Mona; however, when the relationship ends, he automatically blames the core four. Thus, we see aggression surface again. Another kicker? Mike returned Aria's iPod to her with some suspicious A-like violin music on it. Shortly after, he starts seeing Mona again. Finally, when Mona is killed at the end of season 5A (spoiler!), Mike is nowhere to be seen in the group of neighbors gathered outside. Was that because he committed the crime? Possibly.

Hanna is Big A.

[caption id="attachment_451460" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: ABC Family] [Photo Credit: ABC Family][/caption]This theory is gaining momentum, and user dizitalmeow listed some pretty damning evidence in a post from the fall. The user speculates that Hanna's dim-witted personality is fake and used to disguise the fact that she is a genius. (Remember when she scored exceptionally high on the SATs, but referred to them as "SCTs?") We also establish a motive: Hanna, known as "Hefty Hanna" pre-A because she was a tad overweight, was definitely the odd girl out when Alison was the school's Queen Bee. But her personality changed drastically when Alison disappeared: She lost weight, gained confidence, and replaced Alison as Rosewood's alpha female. And when Alison returned, Hanna was the most upset. Seems like the perfect psycho recipe to us.
