Dave Navarro Opens Up About His Mother's Murder In The Devastating Trailer For New Documentary 'Mourning Son'

"It's the most profound moment of my life, and I don't think I should sweep it under the rug anymore."

Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Narvarro is getting extremely personal in the new documentary Mourning Son. In the revealing film, Navarro revisits the trauma of his mother Constance's 1983 murder. Just 15 years old at the time, Dave harbored a deep sense of loss and pain throughout his rise to rock stardom. These inner demons lead him to develop numerous substance abuse problems, including a heroin addiction that nearly claimed his life.

"It feels ugly to tell the story," he admits in the recent trailer, which opens with grisly news footage of the Hollywood crime-scene. Obviously it's a difficult topic for him to discuss, but he feels its necessary in order to grow as an artist and as a human. "It's the most profound moment of my life, and I don't think I should sweep it under the rug anymore. It just was the darkest, most horrible moment of my life."

Navarro executive produced the film, tapping former Married...With Children writer Todd Newman to direct. In addition to the news clips, Newman includes footage from murderer John Riccardi's trial. Riccardi had previously been romantically involved with Constance, and following the murder he disappeared for nearly a decade. "The whole time I'm out touring the world. Riccardi was still on the lose," Navarro remembers. "There was fear and terror."

Perhaps most moving, the film depicts Navarro painting a portrait of his late mother with his own blood for paint. The full film will be available on December 1st, but for now watch the emotional trailer above.
