Motley Crue The Final Tour
With sales of recorded music on the wane and no longer driving the kind of coin they once did, reunion tours by bands looking to line their pocketbooks have saturated the marketplace. Over the course of the last decade or so, the ticket-buying public has gotten wise to these promotional gimmicks, forcing bands to get extremely creative with the value proposition that they set forth for these tours. This has been an overall win for those of us who love live music, making delightful events like the "Hear [INSERT YOUR FAVORITE ALBUM] live in its entirety!" possible. Mötley Crüe is no stranger to the reunion game—they famously put aside their differences and announced a reunion tour back in 2004—but in a press conference held in Los Angeles today, the hair metal hellions upped the ante with a game-changing move: The announced their FINAL TOUR EVER! (Really!)
Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee have always been one of the most self-aware bands out there, and they foresaw that people might be skeptical of a farewell tour they cheekily are calling "All Bad Things Must Come To An End: The Final Tour." So they inserted a wrinkle into their tour announcement; namely, each member of the band signed a binding "cessation of touring document," which essentially means that they PROMISE never to tour again under the name Mötley Crüe ever again.
"We don't want to be one of those bands that maybe have one guy left in it," lead singer Vince Neil said. "We wanted to go on tour with the four founding members of Motley Crue, and go out on top and leave a legacy."
"We've always been proactive about everything we do, including the end of our career," bassist Nikki Sixx added. "A farewell tour means a band is going to get back together, breaks up, and then does another farewell tour until there's no more milk left in the titty. It's a rip-off to the fans, so we decided to call this a Final Tour. We want Motley Crue fans to be proud of us for decades to come."
The announcement was unexpectedly emotional, and Mick Mars' voice repeatedly quivered as he expressed his love for his bandmates. This sounds like a band that really means that this will be their final time hitting the stage together (which, we should note, they will share with Rock And Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper).
Speaking of hitting the stage, there will be 72 North American dates on this tour that kicks off in July in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the ticket prices will be "inclusive" (according to Tommy Lee).
