VH1 Stars Are Rallying Around 'Cosby Show' Star Geoffrey Owens After Trolls Tried to Shame Him For His Side Hustle
Some of these news outlets thought they were doing something but chile, someone done told them wrong.
The internet was in an uproar this past weekend when a report of The Cosby Show's Geoffrey Owens was published, calling the actor out for working at a Trader Joe's in New Jersey. The headline which read, "Cosby Show' actor Geoffrey Owens spotted bagging groceries at NJ Trader Joe's," sparked a huge conversation in the Twitterverse and the land of the 'Gram about shaming people in the industry for just trying to make ends meet. This attempt to humiliate Geoffrey caused many celebrities to speak out against the intent to publicly shame him for his hustle. Basketball Wives' Tami Roman, for one, threw on her bonnet to speak on it because this effort to disgrace this hardworking man- especially during the Labor Day weekend- was simply unacceptable.
So I got set up in the house and got riled, child, 'cause I'm reading where FOX News did a story on Geoffrey Owens. He's an actor, been in the business a long time, and is most familiar for his role on The Cosby Show and apparently this cell phone-caller took some video footage of the man working at Trader Joe's bagging groceries. SO THE F--K WHAT? He was doing what he needed to do for his family and FOX News- with they messy asses- instead of positioning this story in a way that is indicative of Labor Day, because it's Labor Day weekend, what it stands for which is the contributions and achievements of American workers, they tried to shame the man, making it a shameful thing that the man was working. Get the f--k out of here, FOX News. Let me tell you something. That man is honorable, has dignity, respectful, doing what he needs to do for himself and his family and there is not shame in that. I hope everybody reads your ass from the "Amazing Grace" all the way to Equal Opportunity, OK?
Love & Hip Hop's James R. also expressed his disgust in the reporting of Geoffrey's side gig.
F--K SOCIETY YA CRITICIZE A MAN WHO WILL GO OUT THERE N GET HIS BY ANY MEANS BY WORKING A 9-5 TO PROVIDE FOR HIM N HIS FAMILY! WE LIVE IN A WORLD FULL OF MISCONCEPTIONS. I KNOW I BEEN THERE N ILL STILL GO BACK TO DO IT AGAIN IF IT MEANS TO WORK TO FEED MY FAMILY N UPHOLD MYSELF!! RESPECT THE WORKING CLASS!! SHIT I REMEMBER THEM NIGHTS N DAYS WORKING MULTIPLE JOBS, PACKING BAGS, DOING DELIVERIES WHATEVER IT TOOK TO PUT MONEY N FOOD ON THAT TABLE!! ILL NEVER BE ASHAMED TO SAY IT OR TELL IT!!! REAL N---A SHIT!!! #geoffreyowens @thegeoffreyowens SALUTE KING!!
Don't feel too bad for Geoffrey though because he recently told Good Morning America that despite that shady attempt to disparage him, he's "had a great career" and no one has to worry for him. He stated that he's "doing fine," in this ABC exclusive interview.
It should be noted that since The Cosby Show, Geoffrey has been booked and busy appearing on The Affair, The Blacklist, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Blue Bloods, and a plethora of other projects. He's also worked at Yale as a teacher for some time. "Shocking" that none of that work was reported on.
If anything the shame lies on those trying to dim this man's light, because he serves as a beacon for inspiration and hope for aspiring actors. Geoffrey has since quit Trader Joe's but he is very much appreciative of the support that came from this.
Ain't nothing wrong with handling your business!
In this Basketball Wives clip, Cece speaks about how she felt when she was "ganged up on" for her job by the other girls.
