Did Drake Really Jack D.R.A.M.'s "Cha Cha" Style for "Hotline Bling"?

If this year has taught us anything, it's that the 6 God is always at work. Last night was no exception.

Drake released the video for "Hotline Bling" on Monday night via Apple Music. The visuals, directed by Canada's Director X, find Drizzy at his goofiest, dancing like a cornball in a ribbed turtleneck and resting his head on the butt of a girl who inexplicably looks like Serena Williams. The video has already given birth to a slew of memes and gifs of silly Drake dancing, but it's release has also reignited comparisons between "Hotline Bling" and D.R.A.M.'s jaunty tune "Cha Cha."

D.R.A.M., who coincidentally performed in Toronto last night, hopped on Twitter after his show, noting that his performance was "bittersweet."

D.R.A.M. finally shared how he felt about all of the comparisons between his song and Drake's, revealing that he thinks he was "jacked."

Erykah Badu chimed in, voicing the same sentiment that many fans of D.R.A.M.'s song share: We fell in love with "Cha Cha" first.

But the question remains: Did Drake actually jack D.R.A.M.'s style?

It's worth noting that the video for D.R.A.M.'s "Cha Cha" dropped back in March, four months before Drake premiered "Hotline Bling" on OVO Sound. Drake performed "Hotline" at a bar mitzvah before its official premiere, and upon footage of the performance, fans were quick to pick up on the song's similarities to "Cha Cha." Some speculated that what would be known as "Hotline" was actually a "Cha Cha" remix. HotNewHipHop flat out called it that. But it's not.

"Cha Cha" and "Hotline" sample two different songs. D.R.A.M. drew from the classic Super Mario World soundtrack, while Drake borrowed from Timmy Thomas' 1973 hit "Why Can't We Live Together." But the fact that these two songs draw from different tunes doesn't change how alike they ultimately sound. It doesn't change the fact that "Hotline" came out just as "Cha Cha" might have made it mainstream, nor does it change the fact that Drake released the "Hotline" video while D.R.A.M. was performing in Toronto. Curious. No shots fired, just curious.

So now D.R.A.M. feels slighted. Drake remains mute on the matter — as to be expected, but many think he stole D.R.A.M.'s thunder. Maybe Drake did. Maybe he took D.R.A.M.'s song and made a more popular one that, to quote Lorde, "is a really creative clever way of saying something really simple." If Drake did record "Hotline" with "Cha Cha" as inspiration, it would kind of be like following a Chrissy Teigen recipe for Sweet & Spicy Brie & Pear Grilled Cheese but substituting the Brie for Gouda. The substitute was your idea, and maybe it tastes better, but you got the recipe from Chrissy.

But then again, would anyone else have thought to substitute Brie for Gouda?
