Selena Gomez Covers YOK Artist Lorde's Hit Song "Royals"

It seems we're not the only ones who are fans of VH1's You Oughta Know artist for September, Lorde. Last night, Selena Gomez covered Lorde's "Royals" at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, proving that there's more to understanding a song than just memorizing the lyrics.

Lorde's first single, "Royals," is one of the fastest charting alternative tracks in music history, thanks in large part to its barbed critique of the culture of floss that's omnipresent in today's mainstream pop and hip-hop circles (well, that and it's super catchy yet minimalist beat).

In other words, Lorde's hit takes the piss out of the machine that produces pop stars (aka "royals") like Gomez, someone who can definitely lay claim the title of "pop princess," seeing as how her latest album debuted at #1, she picked up a Moonman for "Best Pop Video" at the 2013 Video Music Awards, and she's in the middle of a World Tour (oh, and she famously dated a singer you might have heard of named Justin Bieber). All of which makes Gomez's decision to cover this song an extremely interesting one; is she being super-meta by acknowledging the irony of covering a song that's directed at someone of her ilk, or did she not get that the song was a slight dig at privileged people like her?

Either way, there's no denying the fact that "Royals" has seized the zeitgeist. And speaking of that track, Lorde herself recently spoke to us about how the song was inspired in part with her obsession with historic monarchs and, strangely enough, by an image of a baseball player wearing a Kansas City Royals jersey in National Geographic.
